Great Days out for the over 50s

Getting out of the house and enjoying ourselves is something everyone fundamentally loves to do. Even if you’re still working, making the effort to go out and do something different at the weekend can be a great boost to your mood and energy levels when you’re older, and an ideal way of “taking you out of yourself”.

But how can you ensure that you will enjoy yourself? Where will you go? How much will it cost? These and many other obstacles can be quickly and easily overcome by following these few simple steps:

1. Do your research. This involves keeping a file of events and activities that sound interesting and which you know you and your companion/s possibly would like to do. Information may be gleaned from a wide range of sources including brochures, catalogues, leaflets, advertisements, notices, or personal recommendations.

Often you may find that you come across information for an event that has already passed. If so, start a forward plan of events and likely dates (many events are held annually at roughly the same time of year) to remind yourself to find out about future dates.

2. Do something different. Don’t restrict yourself to events, activities or locations that you have done or been to before. Often an enormous amount of enjoyment comes from doing something completely new, particularly if it challenges you a little. So – think about things you might like to do (go-karting? bread-making? tai-chi?) and find out where, in your area or nearby, you can do them.

On a more basic level, sometimes doing something different may just mean going somewhere you are familiar with but straying off the beaten track to explore different streets or hidden parks and gardens. You’ll be amazed at what treasures might be around you – even within the radius of just a few miles.

3. Be flexible with your time. Some of the best days out take place when most of the rest of the world is at work or school. Although many mainstream events are held at the weekend, many other events or locations are accessible or open during the week and will tend to be quieter. Even if you are still working, it may be worth taking a weekday holiday every now and again to explore and enjoy your local surroundings.

4. Look for discounts. Everyone loves a bargain and your day out may be enhanced by discounts available on entrance fees, either because you are over 50 or 60, or because you can visit off-peak or out of season. There are also off-peak meal deals and transport reductions to be had – all of which can add up to big savings and a great day out.

5. Finally, decide you will enjoy yourself. Often having a day out comes down to going out with a mindset that says you will enjoy yourself regardless of whether or not it rains, the event is a disappointment, the bus is late, you get lost, or any number of other difficulties which you may encounter. They don’t really matter do they? The main thing is that you are out in the world doing something just for fun. Learn to laugh at misfortune and don’t sabotage the joy of the occasion.
