Self-publishing for the over 50s
The growth of self-publishing means it has never been easier to turn a writer’s passion for their subject into a book. Self-publishing has become a hugely popular means of becoming a published author. The medium is currently producing more books than ever, in contrast to mainstream publishers who are turning out fewer and fewer titles.
Successful self-publishing comes down to understanding what is involved in producing and – most importantly – selling your book. In the early days of self-publishing many authors were tempted by offers to ‘publish your book and make it available worldwide’. At that time, few individuals understood the demands of publishing and many were disappointed at the service they received.
Now authors appreciate that there is so much more to producing a book than printing and giving it an ISBN number, and that the crucial elements are the book’s design, production, distribution and marketing. In fact, for many authors the key attraction of self-publishing is their ability to retain total control of their work. It is also perfect for the entrepreneurial author who is keen to become involved in every stage of the book: design, production, marketing, PR and distribution.
Some authors migrate to self-publishing after experiencing the traditional route. Others have found mainstream publishers are wary of their subject matter and not keen to touch potentially controversial subjects or genres which are not currently fashionable. The turn-round speed of a self-publishing project is also an obvious attraction.
Authors who want to go down the self-publishing route should nevertheless research the market and exercise care before entering into any agreement or parting with money.
The first step is to understand your motivation in wanting to be published and how realistic your expectations are in relation to that. In short this means evaluating whether self-publishing is going to be able to deliver what you want to achieve.
In terms of finding a self-publisher, start by compiling a short-list of reputable companies (through an internet search or recommendations) and then evaluate in detail exactly what each can offer. Look for case studies of other authors who have used their services and ask for contact details of one or more satisfied customers.
You also need to identify how your book will be marketed and where your sales will come from – most of which will be down to you. It’s all very well having your book in print, but if nobody buys it what will you feel? In fact some people are just content to see their work in book format and only want copies to give to family, friends or a few interested outsiders. As your eventual feelings of satisfaction with the self-publishing process will be heavily dependent on your expectations you should make these clear to any company you choose to work with from the outset.
